Chapter Nine

Ciara

Two brutal savages, merciless monsters.

Except I’d seen a different side to them.

The odd-shaped clouds rolling across the sky seemed just as ominous as they had before. There’d been intermittent moments of a shocking orange glow, so bright that it had been difficult to focus even in the shadows of the forest. Now there was impending darkness shaped by a powerful storm creating jagged-edged lightning flashing across the sky. Everything had an eerie appearance, as if the world was coming to an end.

Sadly, it was the truth.

I’d been trained in all aspects of aerospace technology, including in-depth education regarding the various galaxies that had been discovered over the centuries. While many solar systems had emerged, little more than floating masses of gaseous clouds and icy rock, one day they would settle, forming new planets. There were others that seemed to be imploding, their planets rocked by cataclysmic forces beyond anyone’s control.

Nature seemed to have a way of curtailing the unwanted or poisoned while providing for new life. With Velathum, what would likely be an implosion appeared to be caused by human tampering.

I couldn’t stand the thought any longer.

A feast. I’d been allowed to dress, even though I knew that I wouldn’t remain in the clothes for long. The food had been incredible, although I’d had difficulty eating, still enjoying the warriors’ voracious appetites as they’d torn into the meat directly off the wooden skewers. I didn’t ask what I’d been served and I didn’t want to know. The nourishment had been a requirement, Krishan hovering over me until I’d gnawed the gamey-tasting meat to the bone.

Bane remained edgy, his watch over me predatory in nature even as I was allowed to venture outside. I stood under a bank of trees, observing the various warriors as they conversed, even laughing, the majority standing close to a massive and beautiful fire as they drank heavily from ceramic-style vessels. Given the increasing volume of their voices, I could tell they were getting intoxicated from the dark-colored liquid.

I stared down at the glass I’d been given, swirling the same concoction that the majority had partaken in. Even the simple act of bringing the rim to my lips was a subtle yet gut-wrenching reminder of the things I was missing at home.

Nights spent with friends, going to the various clubs.

Afternoons away from work, enjoying the alone time in my comfy apartment.

Preparing dinner while laughing with Sara, even pretending one day we’d find the perfect male to suit our needs.

I took a cautious sip, terrified the flavor would be disgusting. The taste was entirely different than I’d expected, fruity in a subtle way, hints of raspberry and even strawberry. From what I’d seen, this environment had little if any in the way of fruits and vegetables. Maybe the Dorchadas protected their food as they did their people, willing to die in order to guard their own.

Perhaps the alien species wasn’t that much different than humans, their need for basic essentials exactly the same; food and drink, warmth and comfort.
